Measure the effectiveness of the relationship

As we've said, it's often the 'intangible' aspects that cause problems - things that may not be specified in the contract! But they can be measured, enabling reporting, guiding discussion, and exposing problem areas.

Make sure you have proper internal alignment

It's definitely worth mounting a workshop for all of the key internal players, to explore the stated goals but also the drivers behind them. To ensure that everyone is really clear, and that an unambiguous message is presented to the partner organisation, when it's time for formal kickoff.

Appoint a relationship manager

It is useful for someone in your organisation, perhaps not within the operational team (as it can become very focused on task at hand) to monitor the health of the relationship with partners on a regular basis. To review with the internal and partner leaders/account managers, and escalate any issues necessary.

Coach the leaders

Internal teams, and particularly the project leaders, can feel alone and unsupported on occasion. They have to make a complex network operate effectively by influence and persuasion. Coaching can help them to act with more confidence, and hone their style and approach.
